چکیده

We investigate the consequence of failures, occurring on the electrical grid, on a telecommunication network. We have focused on the Italian electrical transmission network and the backbone of the internet network for research (GARR). Electrical network has been simulated using the DC power flow method; data traffic on GARR by a model of the TCP/IP basic features. The status of GARR nodes has been related to the power level of the (geographically) neighbouring electrical nodes (if the power level of a node is lower than a threshold, all communication nodes depending on it are switched off). The electrical network has been perturbed by lines removal: the consequent re-dispatching reduces the power level in all nodes. This reduces the number of active GARR nodes and, thus, its Quality of Service (QoS). Averaging over many configurations of perturbed electrical network, we have correlated the degradation of the electrical network with that of the

Modelling infrastructure interdependencies, resiliency and sustainability

The three key concepts of interdependency, resiliency and sustainability of a complex system have appeared in a number of studies and in various contexts. Nevertheless, little has been done to define and analyse them, especially the latter two, in a unified quantitative framework for engineering infrastructures. In this paper, we propose overarching mathematical modelling frameworks to quantify...

An Agent Based Simulator for Critical Interdependent Infrastructures

The increasing relevance of the technological infrastructures (energy, communication, water supply, transportation, etc.) on our life imposes great attention about their protection. These infrastructures are complex networks, geographically dispersed and can be defined as non-linear systems that interact both among themselves, and with their human owners, operators and users [1]. Moreover, the ...

Modelling framework of an instance of the electric power system: functional description and implementation

Critical Infrastructures (CI) are complex and highly interdependent systems, networks, and assets that provide essential services in our daily life. This paper addresses the analysis of the Electric Power Systems (EPS), among the major representatives of critical infrastructures, with focus on the interdependencies that strongly characterize these systems. First, the evaluation framework set up...

Modeling and Simulation of Large Biological, Information and Socio-Technical Systems: An Interaction Based Approach

We describe an interaction based approach for computer modeling and simulation of large integrated biological, information, social and technical (BIST) systems1 Examples of such systems are urban regional transportation systems, the national electrical power markets and grids, gene regulatory networks, the worldwide Internet, infectious diseases, vaccine design and deployment, theater war, etc....
